Common use

Valif is indicated for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED), a condition characterized by the consistent inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual performance. It is used by adult men and is not intended for use by women, children, or adolescents. Sexual stimulation is required for the medication to be effective. It does not increase libido and is not a form of hormonal therapy or aphrodisiac. Valif is used on an as-needed basis and is not a cure for erectile dysfunction.

Dosage and direction

The recommended starting dose for most patients is 10mg, taken orally approximately 25-60 minutes prior to anticipated sexual activity. The dosage may be adjusted based on efficacy and tolerability to a maximum of 20mg or reduced to 5mg. Do not take more than one dose in a 24-hour period. The tablet should be swallowed whole with a glass of water; it may be taken with or without food, although a high-fat meal may delay the onset of action. The dosing should be guided by a physician based on the patient’s health status and response.

Precautions

Prior to initiating treatment with Valif, a thorough medical assessment should be conducted to diagnose erectile dysfunction and identify any underlying causes or cardiovascular risk. Patients with cardiovascular disease, including those for whom sexual activity is not advised due to potential cardiac risk, should not use Valif. Use with caution in patients with anatomical deformation of the penis, predisposition to priapism, severe hepatic impairment, severe renal impairment, or bleeding disorders. This medication does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases. Avoid excessive alcohol consumption, as it may increase the risk of adverse effects and decrease efficacy.

Contraindications

Valif is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to vardenafil or any of the excipients in the formulation. Concomitant administration with any form of organic nitrates or nitric oxide donors is absolutely contraindicated due to the risk of profound hypotension. It is also contraindicated in patients taking guanylate cyclase stimulators, such as riociguat. Use is contraindicated in men for whom sexual activity is inadvisable due to underlying cardiovascular pathology.

Possible side effect

Like all medications, Valif can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Common side effects include headache, flushing, indigestion, dizziness, and nasal congestion. Less frequently, patients may experience blurred vision, changes in color vision, back pain, myalgia, and nausea. Priapism (a prolonged and painful erection lasting more than 4 hours) is a rare but serious side effect requiring immediate medical attention to avoid permanent damage to the penis. Sudden decrease or loss of vision or hearing has been reported in connection with PDE5 inhibitor use.

Drug interaction

Valif can interact with several other medications. The concomitant use of nitrates is absolutely contraindicated. Concurrent use with alpha-blockers (e.g., doxazosin, tamsulosin) may lead to symptomatic hypotension and is not recommended. Potent inhibitors of the CYP3A4 enzyme pathway, such as ketoconazole, itraconazole, ritonavir, indinavir, and clarithromycin, can significantly increase vardenafil plasma concentrations; dose adjustment is necessary. Other antihypertensive agents may have an additive effect on blood pressure lowering. Grapefruit juice may increase plasma levels of vardenafil and should be avoided.

Missed dose

Valif is not intended for regular daily dosing but is taken on an as-needed basis prior to sexual activity. Therefore, the concept of a “missed dose” does not apply. Do not take an extra dose to make up for a missed opportunity. Simply take your next dose as planned prior to your next anticipated sexual activity, ensuring at least 24 hours have passed since your last dose.

Overdose

In cases of suspected overdose, standard supportive measures should be employed. Expected effects would be an exaggeration of the known dose-related adverse effects, such as severe headache, profound hypotension, syncope, and prolonged erection. Management of hypotension should include placing the patient in the Trendelenburg position and administering intravenous fluids. Priapism requires immediate urological intervention. Dialysis is not expected to accelerate clearance as vardenafil is highly protein-bound.

Storage

Store Valif tablets at room temperature (15°C to 30°C or 59°F to 86°F), in their original packaging, to protect from light and moisture. Keep the medication out of the sight and reach of children and pets. Do not use tablets beyond the expiration date printed on the packaging. Do not dispose of medication via wastewater or household waste; consult your pharmacist for proper disposal methods.
