Gyne-Lotrimin is a leading over-the-counter antifungal medication specifically formulated to treat vulvovaginal candidiasis. Containing the active ingredient clotrimazole, a well-established imidazole antifungal, it targets the causative organisms—primarily Candida albicans—by disrupting their cell membrane integrity. This topical cream provides symptomatic relief from itching, burning, and discharge, and is indicated for self-treatment in patients with a prior physician diagnosis of a vaginal yeast infection. Its efficacy and safety profile are supported by extensive clinical use and pharmacologic data.

Features

  • Active Ingredient: Clotrimazole 1% (2% in some formulations)
  • Dosage Form: Topical vaginal cream
  • Presentation: 1 oz (28.4 g) tube with measured-dose applicator
  • Mechanism of Action: Fungistatic and fungicidal via inhibition of ergosterol synthesis
  • Onset of Action: Symptomatic relief often begins within several days
  • Treatment Duration: Most regimens are 3 or 7 days

Benefits

  • Provides rapid relief from pruritus, erythema, and irritation associated with vulvovaginal candidiasis
  • Eradicates infection at the site with high local concentrations and minimal systemic absorption
  • Convenient, pre-measured applicator ensures accurate dosing and ease of administration
  • Available without prescription for prompt initiation of therapy in recurrent cases
  • Low incidence of local adverse effects, supporting strong patient adherence
  • Prevents recurrence when used as directed for the full treatment course

Common use

Gyne-Lotrimin is indicated for the local treatment of vulvovaginal candidiasis (vaginal yeast infection). It is most appropriate for patients who have previously been diagnosed by a healthcare provider and are experiencing a recurrence of similar symptoms, such as vaginal itching, burning, soreness, and a thick, white, odorless discharge. It is not intended for use in pediatric populations or for other types of vaginitis (e.g., bacterial vaginosis or trichomoniasis), which require different therapeutic approaches.

Dosage and direction

Apply intravaginally once daily, preferably at bedtime. For the 7-day treatment: insert one applicatorful (approximately 5 grams) intravaginally for 7 consecutive days. For the 3-day treatment (check product strength; often 2% clotrimazole): insert one applicatorful daily for 3 consecutive days. Wash hands before and after application. Lie on your back with knees bent to insert the applicator gently into the vagina, and press the plunger to release the cream. Clean the applicator with mild soap and water after each use. Complete the full course of therapy even if symptoms improve earlier to prevent recurrence.

Precautions

For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes. Do not use if allergic to clotrimazole or any other ingredient in the formulation. Do not use tampons, douches, or other vaginal products concurrently unless directed by a physician. Sexual intercourse should be avoided during treatment, as the cream may weaken latex condoms and diaphragms. If symptoms persist after completing treatment, or if fever, abdominal pain, or foul-smelling discharge occurs, discontinue use and consult a healthcare provider. Not for use in patients under 12 years of age unless directed by a physician.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to clotrimazole or any components of the formulation. Should not be used by patients with unknown vaginal symptoms or those who have never received a diagnosis of vaginal yeast infection from a healthcare provider. Not for use in suspected or confirmed systemic fungal infections. Avoid in patients with a history of severe local reactions to topical antifungals.

Possible side effect

Most side effects are local and mild. They may include: vaginal burning, itching, or irritation; skin rash; abdominal cramps; headache; or increased urinary frequency. If severe irritation, swelling, or hives occurs, discontinue use immediately and seek medical attention. Systemic effects are rare due to minimal absorption.

Drug interaction

No significant drug interactions have been reported due to low systemic absorption. However, concurrent use with other vaginal antifungals or corticosteroids is not recommended without medical supervision. May weaken latex condoms and diaphragms—use alternative barrier methods during treatment.

Missed dose

Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume the regular schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Overdose

Overdose is unlikely due to topical administration and minimal systemic absorption. If accidentally ingested, seek medical attention or contact a poison control center. Excessive topical application may increase the risk of local irritation.

Storage

Store at room temperature (20–25°C or 68–77°F). Do not freeze. Keep the tube tightly closed and away from direct light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Discard any unused product after the treatment regimen is complete.

Disclaimer

This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Read and follow all label directions. If symptoms do not improve within 3–7 days, or if they worsen, consult a healthcare professional. Do not use if seal is broken. A healthcare provider should be consulted for first-time occurrences of symptoms, or if there is uncertainty regarding diagnosis.

Reviews

Clinical studies and patient reports consistently affirm the efficacy and tolerability of clotrimazole cream for vulvovaginal candidiasis. In controlled trials, over 80% of patients experienced complete resolution of symptoms following a full course of therapy. Users frequently note rapid relief from itching and irritation, with minimal adverse effects. Healthcare providers often recommend it as a first-line OTC option for recurrent yeast infections in appropriate patients.
