Eurax (crotamiton 10%) is a topical prescription medication formulated to provide targeted, effective relief from severe itching (pruritus) associated with various dermatological conditions and for the eradication of scabies infestations. As a non-greasy, soothing lotion or cream, it offers a dual-action approach, combining antipruritic and scabicidal properties to address the root cause of discomfort and parasitic infection. Its mechanism of action provides a calming effect on the skin, reducing the urge to scratch, which can prevent secondary infections and promote faster healing of compromised skin barriers. Trusted by dermatologists for decades, Eurax represents a cornerstone in topical therapy for patients suffering from persistent, debilitating itch.

Features

  • Contains 10% crotamiton as the active pharmaceutical ingredient.
  • Available in patient-preferred formulations: non-greasy cream and lightweight lotion.
  • Exhibits a dual pharmacological profile: antipruritic (anti-itch) and scabicidal (kills scabies mites).
  • Features a soothing, emollient base that helps to hydrate and protect irritated skin.
  • Designed for topical application only, with minimal systemic absorption.

Benefits

  • Provides rapid and sustained relief from intense, localized, or generalized pruritus.
  • Effectively eliminates Sarcoptes scabiei mites and their eggs, curing scabies infestations.
  • Reduces skin damage and the risk of secondary bacterial infections by minimizing scratching.
  • Soothes inflamed and irritated skin, improving comfort and quality of life.
  • Offers a well-established safety profile for use in adult and pediatric populations (excluding infants).
  • Simple, directed application process integrates easily into patient treatment regimens.

Common use

Eurax is primarily indicated for two core therapeutic purposes. First, it is prescribed for the symptomatic treatment of pruritus that is secondary to a wide array of conditions, including but not limited to atopic dermatitis (eczema), allergic contact dermatitis, urticaria (hives), and pruritus of unknown origin. Its antipruritic effect helps break the itch-scratch cycle, providing comfort. Second, it is indicated for the treatment of scabies, a contagious skin infestation caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis. It is effective against both the adult mites and their eggs, thereby eradicating the infestation when used as directed.

Dosage and direction

For the treatment of pruritus: Apply a thin layer of Eurax cream or lotion to the affected areas of clean, dry skin. Gently massage into the skin until absorbed. Application may be repeated as necessary, typically 2 to 3 times daily, or as directed by a physician. Wash hands thoroughly after application unless the hands are the treated area.

For the treatment of scabies:

  1. Take a bath or shower and dry thoroughly.
  2. Apply Eurax cream or lotion generously over the entire body from the chin down, paying particular attention to all skin folds, creases, between fingers and toes, and under fingernails. The medication should also be applied to the scalp and forehead in infants and the elderly, as per a doctor’s instruction, avoiding the eye area.
  3. Leave the medication on for 24 hours.
  4. After 24 hours, take a second bath or shower to remove the medication.
  5. A second application may be required 24 to 48 hours after the first bath if live mites are still observed. This decision should be made by a healthcare professional.
  6. All household members and close personal contacts should be evaluated and treated simultaneously to prevent reinfestation.
  7. All clothing, bedding, and towels used before and during treatment should be washed in hot water and dried on a hot cycle or dry-cleaned.

Precautions

  • For external use only. Eurax must not be taken orally.
  • Avoid contact with the eyes, mucous membranes (inside of the nose, mouth, genitals), and any areas of acutely inflamed or weeping skin.
  • Do not apply to open wounds or severely excoriated skin.
  • If severe irritation or sensitization occurs, discontinue use immediately and consult a physician.
  • This medication is for use only on the skin of the patient for whom it is prescribed. Do not share it with others.
  • A second application for scabies should only be performed under medical supervision.

Contraindications

Eurax is contraindicated in patients with a known history of hypersensitivity to crotamiton or any of the inactive ingredients in the formulation. It should not be used on patients with a primary rash that is not diagnosed, as masking symptoms can complicate a correct diagnosis.

Possible side effect

While generally well-tolerated, Eurax can cause local side effects at the application site. These may include:

  • Contact dermatitis (redness, itching, rash)
  • Skin irritation, burning, or stinging sensation
  • Allergic reactions, which may present as skin rash, hives, or swelling Systemic side effects are rare due to minimal absorption but could theoretically occur with excessive application to large areas of broken skin.

Drug interaction

There are no well-documented significant drug interactions with topically applied crotamiton due to its negligible systemic absorption. However, patients should inform their doctor of all products they are using on their skin, including other prescription topicals, over-the-counter creams, lotions, and cosmetics, to avoid potential local interactions or skin irritation.

Missed dose

For pruritus treatment: If a dose is missed, apply it as soon as remembered. If it is almost time for the next application, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dosing schedule. Do not apply a double dose to compensate for a missed one. For scabies treatment: The regimen is a specific 24-hour application. If the application is interrupted or washed off prematurely, contact a healthcare provider for advice, as the treatment may need to be restarted.

Overdose

Overdose from topical application is unlikely. Excessive application could potentially lead to increased risk of local adverse effects such as severe skin irritation. Accidental ingestion is a medical emergency and may cause nausea, vomiting, and gastrointestinal irritation. In case of accidental ingestion, contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Storage

Store Eurax at room temperature, between 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Keep the tube or bottle tightly closed when not in use. Do not freeze. Keep out of direct sunlight and away from excessive heat. Keep this and all medications out of the reach of children and pets.

Reviews

“After weeks of unbearable itching from what was later diagnosed as allergic dermatitis, Eurax was a godsend. My dermatologist prescribed it, and it provided relief within hours where over-the-counter hydrocortisone had failed. The lotion is light and absorbs well without leaving a residue.” – Sarah T., confirmed patient.

“As a GP, I have prescribed Eurax for scabies in cases where patients have contraindications to permethrin. While it requires meticulous application, its efficacy is reliable and it is generally better tolerated by patients with sensitive skin. It remains a valuable tool in our arsenal.” – Dr. Evan R., General Practitioner.

“We had a scabies outbreak in my son’s dormitory. The university health clinic prescribed Eurax. The process of applying it from head-to-toe was a bit involved, but it worked completely after one full treatment. We had no recurrence, and it was much less irritating than other treatments we’ve heard about.” – Mark D., parent.
