Available in multiple formats, including coated tablets and suppositories, Dulcolax allows for tailored treatment based on individual needs and symptom severity. Its well-established efficacy and safety profile make it a cornerstone in the management of transient constipation.
Features

- Onset of Action: Tablets generally produce a bowel movement in 6 to 12 hours; suppositories work in 15 minutes to 1 hour
- Formulations: Enteric-coated oral tablets and rectal suppositories
- Non-Habit Forming: When used for occasional constipation as directed
- Sugar-Free and Gluten-Free formulation
Benefits
- Provides predictable and effective relief from occasional constipation.
- Offers a choice of administration methods to suit individual preference and urgency.
- Works locally in the colon, with minimal systemic absorption.
- Helps restore regularity and alleviate discomfort associated with constipation.
- A trusted, clinically proven option with a long history of safe use.
- Prevents straining, which can be particularly beneficial for individuals with hemorrhoids or post-surgical patients.
Common use
Dulcolax (bisacodyl) is commonly used for the relief of occasional constipation. It is also frequently employed to evacuate the bowel prior to surgical procedures, diagnostic tests like colonoscopies, or radiological examinations, as directed by a physician. It is suitable for use in adults and children over 6 years of age.
Dosage and direction
Adults and children 12 years and older:
- Oral Tablets: 1 to 3 tablets (5 mg to 15 mg) taken orally, swallowed whole with a full glass of water. Do not chew or crush. Best taken at bedtime for predictable results the next morning.
- Suppositories: 1 suppository (10 mg) inserted rectally, once daily.
Children 6 to under 12 years:
- Oral Tablets: 1 tablet (5 mg) taken orally, swallowed whole with a full glass of water.
- Suppositories: 1 suppository (10 mg) inserted rectally, once daily. Use in children should be under the guidance of a doctor.
Do not use for more than 7 days unless directed by a doctor. Do not take oral tablets within 1 hour of taking antacids or drinking milk.
Precautions
- Before use, consult a doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a history of kidney disease.
- Do not use if you have stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, or a sudden change in bowel habits that persists for more than 2 weeks.
- Prolonged or excessive use may lead to electrolyte imbalance (e.g., loss of potassium) and dependence on laxatives for bowel function.
- Use with caution if you have an ileostomy or colostomy.
- Taking bisacodyl tablets with milk or antacids can cause the coating to dissolve prematurely, leading to stomach upset or cramping.
Contraindications
Dulcolax is contraindicated in patients with:
- Known hypersensitivity to bisacodyl or any component of the formulation.
- Acute surgical abdomen, appendicitis, fecal impaction, or intestinal obstruction.
- Severe abdominal pain accompanied by nausea and vomiting.
- Acute inflammatory bowel diseases (e.g., Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis).
Possible side effect
While generally well-tolerated, some individuals may experience side effects, including:
- Abdominal discomfort, cramping, and mild nausea.
- Electrolyte imbalance (with prolonged or excessive use).
- Weakness, dizziness, or sweating.
- Rectal burning or irritation (with suppository use).
- Diarrhea, which may lead to dehydration.
Drug interaction
- Antacids and Milk: Concomitant ingestion can cause the enteric coating of the tablet to dissolve in the stomach, leading to gastric irritation or vomiting. Separate administration by at least 1 hour.
- Diuretics or Corticosteroids: Concurrent use with laxatives may increase the risk of hypokalemia (low potassium levels).
- Antiarrhythmic drugs (e.g., Digoxin): Electrolyte disturbances caused by laxatives can potentiate the toxic effects of these drugs.
- Other Laxatives: Using multiple laxative products simultaneously is not recommended due to an increased risk of adverse effects.
Missed dose
Dulcolax is taken on an as-needed basis for occasional constipation and does not follow a daily dosing schedule. Therefore, the concept of a “missed dose” does not apply. Do not take extra medication to make up for a missed dose.
Overdose
Overdose of Dulcolax may lead to severe cramping, abdominal pain, diarrhea, dehydration, and electrolyte imbalance (hypokalemia). Symptoms of electrolyte imbalance include muscle cramps, weakness, dizziness, and irregular heartbeat. In case of suspected overdose, seek immediate medical attention or contact a Poison Control Center. Treatment is supportive and includes fluid and electrolyte replacement.
Storage
- Store at room temperature (20°C to 25°C or 68°F to 77°F).
- Keep the product in its original container, tightly closed, and protected from moisture.
- Keep out of reach of children and pets.
- Do not use suppositories if they are melted or softened; they may be reshaped by cooling in the refrigerator while still wrapped.

Reviews
“Dulcolax has been my go-to solution for pre-colonoscopy prep for years. The timing is incredibly predictable, which reduces the anxiety of the whole process. It’s effective without being overly harsh when used as directed.” – Michael R., 58
“As a nurse, I often recommend Dulcolax tablets to post-operative patients who are experiencing constipation from pain medication. The delayed action allows them to take it at night and have a comfortable bowel movement in the morning without disrupting their sleep. It’s a reliable product with a clear mechanism.” – Sarah L., BSN, RN
“I tried several gentle laxatives with no success. My pharmacist suggested Dulcolax suppositories for faster relief. While the idea was intimidating at first, the results were worth it. It worked within 45 minutes and provided the relief I desperately needed.” – Jenna T., 34
“I’ve used the tablets for occasional constipation for a long time. I appreciate that I only need one pill to get things moving. The key for me is to drink plenty of water throughout the day after taking it to avoid any cramping.” – Robert K., 71
