Diarex is a clinically formulated antidiarrheal medication designed for rapid and effective management of acute diarrhea. Its targeted mechanism works to reduce intestinal motility and fluid secretion, providing symptomatic relief while supporting electrolyte balance. Suitable for adults and children over a specified age, it combines efficacy with a well-established safety profile when used as directed. Healthcare professionals recommend Diarex for its reliability in both occasional and recurrent episodes of diarrhea.

Features

  • Rapid-acting formulation with effects typically noted within one hour
  • Available in tablet and liquid suspension formats
  • Does not require refrigeration for stability
  • Pre-measured dosage units for accurate administration
  • Coated tablets for easier swallowing

  • Provides prompt reduction in bowel movement frequency and urgency
  • Helps restore normal intestinal function without causing constipation when used appropriately
  • Minimizes risk of dehydration by decreasing fluid loss
  • Supports continued daily activities by controlling symptoms effectively
  • Reduces abdominal cramping and discomfort associated with diarrhea
  • Suitable for travel-related or infectious diarrhea management

Common use

Diarex is indicated for the control and symptomatic relief of acute nonspecific diarrhea. It is also used in managing chronic diarrhea associated with inflammatory bowel disease under medical supervision. Patients frequently use it for diarrhea related to viral infections, dietary changes, or stress. It is not intended for use in diarrhea caused by certain toxins or invasive organisms unless advised by a physician.

Dosage and direction

Adults and children 12 years and older: Initial dose of 4 mg (2 tablets or 20 mL liquid) followed by 2 mg after each loose stool. Do not exceed 16 mg per 24-hour period.
Children 6–11 years: 1 mg after each loose stool; maximum 4 mg in 24 hours. Use only under medical advice for this age group.
Administration: Tablets should be swallowed whole with water. Liquid formulation must be measured using the provided dosing cup. Treatment should not continue beyond 48 hours without consulting a healthcare provider.

Precautions

Do not use if bloody stools or high fever are present. Avoid in cases of suspected bacterial enteritis. Use with caution in patients with hepatic impairment. Prolonged use may cause dependency or mask symptoms of serious conditions. Not recommended during pregnancy or lactation unless directed by a physician. Keep out of reach of children.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to loperamide or any component of the formulation. Contraindicated in patients with abdominal pain without diarrhea, acute ulcerative colitis, pseudomembranous colitis, or in children under 6 years of age.

Possible side effect

Common side effects may include constipation, dizziness, or nausea. Rarely, allergic reactions, abdominal discomfort, or dry mouth may occur. Discontinue use and seek medical attention if symptoms such as bloating, vomiting, or slowed breathing appear.

Drug interaction

May interact with opioids, anticholinergic agents, and certain antibiotics. Concurrent use with QT-prolonging drugs may increase arrhythmia risk. Consult a healthcare provider if taking protease inhibitors or drugs metabolized by CYP enzymes.

Missed dose

Since Diarex is taken as needed after loose stools, a missed dose is not applicable. Do not double doses.

Overdose

Symptoms may include CNS depression, constipation, ileus, or respiratory depression. In case of suspected overdose, seek immediate medical attention. Naloxone may be used in emergency settings.

Storage

Store at room temperature (15–30°C). Protect from light and moisture. Do not use after the expiration date printed on packaging.

Disclaimer

This product is for symptomatic relief and is not a substitute for medical diagnosis or treatment of underlying conditions. Consult a healthcare professional for diarrhea lasting more than 48 hours, or if accompanied by fever or blood in stool.
