Benoquin Cream: Clinically Formulated for Depigmentation Therapy

Benoquin Cream is a prescription-strength topical agent containing monobenzone as its active ingredient, designed for the permanent depigmentation of remaining pigmented skin in patients with extensive vitiligo. It functions by irreversibly inhibiting melanin production, offering a uniform skin appearance in cases where repigmentation is no longer feasible. This treatment is reserved for severe, widespread depigmenting conditions and must be used under strict dermatological supervision due to its potent and permanent effects.

Features

  • Active ingredient: Monobenzone 200 mg/g (20% w/w)
  • Pharmaceutical form: Topical cream
  • Mechanism: Selective cytotoxicity toward melanocytes
  • Prescription status: Rx-only medication
  • Packaging: Typically supplied in 30 g tubes

Benefits

  • Achieves permanent depigmentation in resistant, widespread vitiligo
  • Provides a more uniform skin tone in extensively affected individuals
  • Reduces the visual contrast between pigmented and depigmented areas
  • May improve quality of life by minimizing the appearance of patchy skin
  • Clinically validated for use in cases unresponsive to repigmentation therapy
  • Formulated for topical application with targeted action

Common use

Benoquin Cream is indicated for the permanent depigmentation of the remaining pigmented skin in patients with extensive, treatment-resistant vitiligo affecting more than 50% of the body surface area. It is not intended for partial or cosmetic use and should never be applied to localized areas. Its use is generally considered when other treatments have failed and the patient opts for complete, uniform depigmentation.

Dosage and direction

Apply a thin layer of Benoquin Cream to the remaining pigmented areas twice daily, or as directed by a healthcare provider. Gently rub into the skin until absorbed. Avoid application near eyes, mucous membranes, and already depigmented skin. Treatment duration varies; depigmentation usually begins within 1–4 months and may take up to a year for full effect. Discontinue use once desired depigmentation is achieved.

Precautions

  • For external use only. Do not ingest.
  • Avoid sun exposure; use broad-spectrum sunscreen on treated areas.
  • Do not use on inflamed, abraded, or broken skin.
  • Wash hands thoroughly after application.
  • Not recommended for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless deemed necessary by a physician.
  • Keep away from children and pets.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to monobenzone or any component of the formulation
  • History of melanoma or dysplastic nevus syndrome
  • Use in patients with localized or limited vitiligo
  • Application on already depigmented skin
  • Concurrent use with other topical drugs without medical advice

Possible side effects

  • Skin irritation, redness, itching, or burning at application site
  • Dryness, cracking, or swelling
  • Contact dermatitis
  • In rare cases, hypopigmentation or depigmentation beyond treatment area
  • Allergic reactions such as rash or hives

Drug interaction

No formal drug interaction studies have been conducted. However, avoid concomitant use with other topical medications (e.g., corticosteroids, retinoids) unless approved by a dermatologist. Systemic absorption is minimal but possible; consult a physician if using other medications.

Missed dose

If a dose is missed, apply it as soon as remembered. If it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume the regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

Overdose

Overapplication may intensify local adverse effects such as severe irritation, burning, or blistering. In case of accidental ingestion, seek immediate medical attention. Symptomatic treatment is recommended.

Storage

Store at room temperature (15–30°C). Keep the tube tightly closed and away from direct light or moisture. Do not freeze. Discard any unused product after the treatment period.
