Bactroban Ointment 5g: Targeted Topical Antibiotic for Skin Infection Relief

Bactroban Ointment 5g is a prescription topical antibiotic containing mupirocin 2% w/w as the active ingredient. It is specifically formulated for the treatment of bacterial skin infections, such as impetigo, folliculitis, and other primary and secondary skin infections caused by susceptible strains of bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. Its unique mechanism of action inhibits bacterial protein synthesis, making it a potent and focused treatment option. This formulation is designed for localized application, minimizing systemic absorption and focusing therapeutic action directly at the site of infection.

Features

  • Contains mupirocin 2% w/w in a white, soft, paraffin-based ointment
  • Packaged in a 5g aluminum tube for precise dispensing and hygiene
  • Bactericidal activity against Gram-positive bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)
  • Low systemic absorption when applied topically to intact or broken skin
  • Water-miscible base that allows for spreadability and does not occlude the skin

Benefits

  • Effectively eliminates common skin infection-causing bacteria at the site of application
  • Reduces symptoms such as redness, swelling, pain, and crusting associated with impetigo and other localized infections
  • Minimizes risk of infection spread to other areas of the body or to other individuals
  • Low incidence of systemic side effects due to localized action
  • Convenient, small tube size ideal for short-term treatment and portability
  • Helps prevent complications from untreated bacterial skin infections

Common use

Bactroban Ointment is primarily indicated for the topical treatment of impetigo, a contagious bacterial skin infection characterized by honey-colored crusts, caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. It is also used for other primary skin infections such as folliculitis, as well as secondary infected traumatic skin lesions. It may be employed in the eradication of nasal colonization of MRSA when applied intranasally, though specific formulations exist for that purpose. It is not effective against fungal or viral infections.

Dosage and direction

A small amount of Bactroban Ointment should be applied to the affected area three times daily (approximately every 8 hours). The area may be covered with a gauze dressing if desired. Wash hands before and after application. The treated area should be gently cleansed and dried prior to application. The usual duration of treatment is up to 10 days. If no improvement is seen after 3–5 days, reevaluation of diagnosis is recommended. Do not use for longer than prescribed.

Precautions

Use only on the skin; avoid contact with eyes, nose, mouth, or other mucous membranes. If accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water. Do not use on large open wounds or severe burns due to increased potential for systemic absorption. Use with caution in patients with moderate or severe renal impairment, as polyethylene glycol excipient can be absorbed through damaged skin and excreted renally. Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms, including fungi.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to mupirocin or any component of the ointment, such as polyethylene glycol. Should not be used in individuals with a known history of allergic reaction to similar topical antibiotics.

Possible side effect

Most side effects are localized and mild. Common reactions include burning, stinging, or pain at the application site; itching; rash; dryness; and erythema. Less frequently, nausea may occur. Allergic contact dermatitis has been reported. Systemic reactions are rare due to minimal absorption but could include generalized rash or pruritus in sensitized individuals.

Drug interaction

No specific drug interactions have been clinically significant due to low systemic absorption. However, concurrent use with other topical products on the same area should be avoided unless directed by a physician, as the ointment base may interfere with the absorption or efficacy of other topical agents.

Missed dose

Apply the missed dose as soon as remembered, unless it is almost time for the next scheduled dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed application. Resume the regular dosing schedule.

Overdose

Topical overdose is unlikely due to limited systemic absorption. Accidental ingestion may lead to gastrointestinal upset. In case of ingestion, seek medical attention. Systemic toxicity is not expected from topical application, even with excessive use.

Storage

Store at room temperature (15–30Β°C). Do not freeze. Keep the tube tightly closed when not in use. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Do not use after the expiration date printed on the packaging.

Reviews

Clinical studies and post-marketing surveillance indicate high efficacy and good tolerability for Bactroban Ointment in treating impetigo and other superficial skin infections. Patients and physicians frequently report rapid improvement in symptoms, with low incidence of adverse effects. It is considered a first-line topical option for localized bacterial skin infections in both adult and pediatric populations.
